FC BERNA Announces the Appointment of a Director of Coaching
A few days ago, we unveiled the new club name, logo and team colors for the newly created FC BERNA. We also promised that exciting new information about the future of our club would be released shortly following that initial announcement.
Therefore, we are extremely excited to disclose that Jeff Zaun, current NY Red Bulls U14 Coach, has agreed to join FC BERNA as our new Director of Coaching. Coach Zaun has a distinguished playing and coaching career in soccer at all levels of the sport and his appointment establishes FC BERNA as one of the premier soccer clubs in New Jersey.
Coach Zaun has coached the Red Bulls U14 team since 2010, during which time it has won the Northeast Regional League and Regional playoffs in all four seasons. He has been very successful in evaluating and developing youth talent having had over 30 players invited into youth national team camps, including a record seven players invited to join the prestigious US U17 National Team residency program in 2011. In 2012, Soccer America magazine named the Red Bulls Academy as the top youth academy program in the United States. Before joining the Red Bulls, Coach Zaun served as the Associate Head Coach at Rutgers University for eight seasons, during which time he also served as a Youth National Team Scout for US Soccer. During his time at Rutgers, the team reached the NCAA tournament three times and the Big East playoffs six times. Coach Zaun himself was a four-year starter and two year captain with Rutgers from 1989 to 1992 and played in the NCAA tournament all four years. He was recently named to the Rutgers 75th Year Anniversary team and is a member of the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame. After graduation, Coach Zaun played four seasons in Major League Soccer (MLS), three with NY/NJ Metrostars (now the NY Red Bulls) and one season with Chicago Fire.
Jeff and his wife Chrissy are Bernardsville residents and proud parents to three children- Jeffrey Jr. (“JJ”), Charlotte and Payton, two of which are current or former players in the Somerset Hills and Ridge Mavericks soccer programs. The combination of Coach Zaun’s world class soccer pedigree and intimate knowledge of the area and heritage clubs makes him uniquely fitted for this appointment.
“I am very excited to join BERNA as its Director of Coaching in order to help establish a regionally recognized club, build on the proud tradition of great soccer in this area and give back to the community in which I have enjoyed being a part for many years,” said Coach Zaun.
The role of the Director of Coaching within FC BERNA is to build a top notch soccer program by developing the very best coaching talent, defining a player development curriculum across all age groups and programs and fostering a positive club culture that unifies all around a common passion for the game of soccer. Furthermore, the role sets the tone for the club by establishing a fun and supportive environment for all FC BERNA players, with an emphasis on skill-development that is appropriate to each individual’s level of ability and ambition.
In the coming days, weeks and months, FC BERNA and Coach Zaun will be sharing information regarding the player development curriculum, intended club programs and key upcoming events. Please check your inbox and our websites for these future announcements.
